Scientific Description:

Perennial (rarely flowering in first year), 20100 cm, subglabrous or hairy. Stem usually broadly sinuate-winged with triangular, entire or lobulate shortly spinulose-margined lobes, sparingly branched above. Cauline leaves deeply pinnatipartite, primary segments often overlapping, varying from broadly ovate and shortly 23-lobed to oblong and unequally pinnatifid, apices and margins shortly and weakly spinulose, lower surface grey-tomentosus to weakly arachnoid or subglabrous. Peduncles long, 420 cm, naked and tomentosus above. Capitula subsolitary. Involucre globose, weakly floccose to subglabrous, 1722 mm long; phyllaries gradually imbricate, all usually adpressed, outer narrowly oblong, 1-nerved distally, very obtuse and shortly spinulose-mucronate, median similar but more attenuate and subacute, inner scarious and linear-subulate. Corollas zygomorphic, purple, 1720 mm. Achenes 45,5 mm; pappus 1214 mm.

 

Flowering time: July−August.

Habitat: Water meadows, pastures, rocky slopes and ridges, usually 18002600 m.

Public Description:

Carduus adpressus, known as “tomara” in Turkish, is native to Bulgaria, Türkiye, Western Caucasus. It is a perennial herb with purple flowers, and grows up to 100 cm in length. It blooms between July and August and is found in water meadows, pastures, rocky slopes and ridges.
