Scientific Description:

Glabrescent annual, usually villose below, 1040 cm, sparingly and strictly branched. Leaf laciniae linear. Flowers 1324 mm across. Sepals pallid, glabrous or villose outside. Petals oblong-oblanceolate, flame-scarlet, often with a black base. Achenes lax, c. 3 mm, rugose-reticulate, dorsal margin with an obtuse projection adpressed to the style and shorter than it, transverse crest usually weakly toothed; beak slender, short, curved upwards, indigo-tipped.

 

Flowering time: April−June.

Habitat: Fields, steppe, rocky places, s.l.−1900 m.

Public Description:

Adonis flammea, known as “flame adonis”, is native to Türkiye, eastern Mediterranean countries, Central and Southern Europe. It is an annual herb with flame-scarlet flowers, and grows up to 40 cm in length. It blooms between April and June and is found in fields, steppe, and rocky places. The generic name “Adonis” refers to the mythic character “Adonis”, a lover of the goddess Aphrodite or Venus. The species name of “flammea” comes from Latin word, meaning “flame-like” and refers to color of flowers.
