Scientific Description:

Annual to perennial herbs or shrubs, sometimes scrambling, usually hairy, often prickly. Leaves entire to imparipinnate. Flowers in cymes or rarely solitary. Calyx campanulate, 5-fid, often stellate in fruit. Corolla rotate, lobes often recurved. Stamens inserted at corolla throat. Anthers closely connivent in a cone, dehiscing by 2 terminal pores, later splitting introrsely. Fruit a berry.

Public Description:

Solanum, known as “nightshade”, consists of annual and perennial herbs, vines, subshrubs, shrubs, and small trees. This genus is mostly native to the America continent but spread and naturalized to other parts of the world. There are approximately 1199 species in the world and 14 species (14 taxa) in Türkiye. Solanum include three food crops of high economic importance, potato (Solanum tuberosum L.), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), and egg plant (Solanum melongena L.). Also, pepino (Solanum muricatum

Aiton) is found in this genus. In addition, some species are used as ornamental plants and some species have high toxicity.
