Public Description:
Polygonum, known as “Knotweed”, “Knotgrass”, “Bistort”, consists of annual and perennial herbaceous plants and primarily grows in northern temperate regions. There are approximately 217 species in the world and 40 species (46 taxa) in Türkiye. The genus name is derived from the Greek words "poly" and "gono" which means "very" and "joint", in reference to the swollen jointed stem. The Knotweed, especially madımak (Polygonum cognatum Meisn.), is frequently used in Central Anatolian cuisine. In Chinese medicine, some knotweed extracts are used to treat urinary tract infections.
