Scientific Description:
Annual or perennial. Ligule hyaline, obtuse to truncate. Leaf blades flat. Inflorescence a spike-like panicle. Spikelets with 1 floret, hermaphrodite, laterally compressed. Rachilla disarticulating above glumes. Glumes equal, 3- veined, longer than lemma, sometimes with a narrow wing on keel, gradually or abruptly terminating in aristate point or with a small mucro. Lemma 5−7-veined, rounded dorsally, obtuse or truncate at apex, always awnless. Palea equalling lemma or slightly shorter, 2-veined. Lodicules 2. Stamens (2−)3. Ovary glabrous. Caryopsis elliptic to ovoid.

Public Description:
Phleum is a genus of annual and perennial plants, commonly known as “timothy”, and is native to Europe, Asia and North Africa. There are 18 species in the world and 5 species (10 taxa) in Türkiye. Several species are important as cattle feed and hay for horses.
