Public Description:

Papaver is a genus of frost-tolerant annuals, biennials, and perennials known as “poopy”. It is native to temperate and cold regions of Eurasia, Africa and North America. There are approximately 55 species in the world and 36 species (48 taxa) in Türkiye. This genus has gray-green leaves and short-lived magnificent flowers and the flowers are single or clustered. The flowers are red, pink, orange, yellow or lilac. Decorative seed pods are visible after flowering. Poppies have been grown as ornamental plants since 5000 BC in Mesopotamia. They were found in Egyptian tombs. In Greek mythology, the poppy was associated with “Demeter, goddess of fertility and agriculture”. People believed they would get a bountiful crop if poppies grew in their fields.
