Scientific Description:

Glabrous to densely villous perennials or biennials with solid stems; rootstock often crowned with fibrous or non-fibrous collar. Leaves 2−4-pinnate, upper ± sheath-like, broad and persistent; petioles usually broadly winged. Bracts and bracteoles present, often conspicuous. Sepals present. Petals white or yellow. Fruit glabrous or pubescent, oblong, winged, wings 4 or 9 on all or only on secondary ridges; mericarps ± terete or slightly dorsally compressed. Dorsal vittae 4 or 9, commissural 2.

Public Description:

Laserpitium is a genus of biennial or perennial herbs, known as “enguban” in Turkish. They have compound umbels of white or yellow flowers and 4 or 9-winged fruits. There are 14 species in the world and 5 species (5 taxa) in Türkiye. Some species of this genus (L. latifolium L., L. zernyi Hayek and L. ochridanum Micevski) have antifungal and antibacterial properties. Also, these species are widely used as spices and are used in traditional medicine for treatment of infection and inflammation.
