JURINEA Cass. - GEYİKGÖBEĞİ (IN TURKISH)

Scientific Description:

Perennial herbs, rarely suffrutescent or acaulous. Leaves unarmed, rosulate or alternate, entire, pinnatilobed or pinnatisect. Capitula homogamous, discoid, solitary to corymbose. Involucre cylindrical to globose; phyllaries (4−)5−6(−8)-seriate, imbricate, linear to lanceolate (outer ones sometimes triangular), apex unarmed or spinulose, erect or recurved, adpressed to lax. Receptacle long-bristly. Flowers lilac to purplish. Achenes narrowly obpyramidal, ± tetragonal, truncate above, with a membranous crown (coronula) around pappus base; umbo depressed-barrel-shaped or saucer-shaped; hilum basal or nearly so. Pappus hairs stiff, pluriseriate, persistent, scabrous, barbellate or plumose, 2−3 innermost bristles longer and broader than rest.

Public Description:

Jurinea is a genus of perennial herbs and rarely suffrutescent plants, known as “geyikgöbeği” in Turkish, and is distributed in Northwest Africa, Central and Southwest Asia, and Europe. There are approximately 207 species in the world and 21 species (22 taxa) in Türkiye. They have lilac to purplish color flowers.
