Scientific Description:

Annuals or perennials. Leaves usually flat. Inflorescence a dense, compressed spike; rachis fragile, disarticulating beneath each cluster of spikelets, or tough (in cultivated species). Spikelets of l(−2) florets, arranged in clusters of 3 at each rachis node; central spikelet usually sessile, hermaphrodite and fertile, the two lateral ones pedicellate, male or sterile in wild species but both fertile in cultivated 4- or 6-rowed barleys. Glumes similar or dissimilar, setaceous, linear-subulate, or narrowly lanceolate or narrowly ovate, awned. Lemma narrowly ovate, 5-veined, awned or unawned.

Public Description:

Hordeum, is a genus of annual and perennial plants, commonly known as “barley”, and is native to throughout the temperate region of Africa, Eurasia, and the Americas. There are approximately 43 species in the world and 4 species (9 taxa) in Türkiye. The cultivars belonging to this genus with commercial importance as cereals are used for fodder, vinegar production, malting in beer and whiskey production. They are also used in baby foods, breakfast cereals or combined with wheat flour for baking.
