HERNIARIA L. - RUPTUREWORT
Scientific Description:
Annual to perennial, procumbent or ascending. Leaves essentially opposite (sometimes apparently alternate when one of a pair is absent), small. Flowers (including the short pedicel) very small, in leaf-opposed or apparently axillary, rarely terminal, clusters, bracts inconspicuous. Sepals in Turkish species usually 5, subequal, very rarely 4 or 6. Staminodes 4−5, minute, filiform and very inconspicuous, or absent. Stamens 2−5. Fruit shorter than to clearly exceeding the sepals; stigma 2-lobed.
Public Description:
Herniaria is a genus of annual or perennial herbs, known as “rupturewort”, and is native to Eurasia and Africa, but several species have been widely introduced to other continents. There are approximately 33 species in the world and 12 species (12 taxa) in Türkiye.
