ACHILLEAL. - YARROW

Scientific Description:

Perennial pilose herbs, often with thick woody rootstocks. Leaves entire to 3−4-pinnatipartite, alternate. Capitula heterogamous, radiate, pedunculate or sub-sessile, small or medium-sized, usually arranged in a terminal corymb, more rarely solitary, terminal. Involucre oblong-cylindrical, ovoid, hemispherical or depressed. Phyllaries pluriseriate, ± scarious-margined. Flowers white or yellow; ray flowers female, ligules ± 3-dentate; disc flowers hermaphrodite, regularly 5-toothed, corolla-tubes ± compressed, bases pouched and enveloping tops of achenes. Receptacle ± flat or convex, paleaceous, paleae lanceolate or oblong, hyaline, with midrib not reaching apex of paleae. Achenes glabrous, smooth, compressed, not winged, oblong or obovate, tips rather broad. Pappus absent.

Public Description:

Achillea, commonly known as “yarrow”, is native to Europe, temperate areas of Asia, and North America There are approximately 151 species in the world and 50 species (58 taxa) in Türkiye. The genus was named after the Greek mythological character Achilles (Greek warrior). They have white, yellow, orange, pink or red flowers which shows the combination of dozen or hundreds of small flowers that look like a single flower. They are generally visited by many insects, and thus its pollinization is easy. A number of species are popular garden plants.
