Annualtoperennialherbs, sometimeswoody. Leavesalternate. Stipulesminute, glandular. Flowerszygomorphic, in racemesorspikes. Sepals 4−8, free. Petals 4−10, free, in Turkey at leastthetwoposteriorusuallydeeplylaciniate. Stamensfewtomany, inserted on an eccentricdisc. Ovarysuperior, unilocularwith 3−7 carpels, usuallyopen at theapex. Fruitusually a gapingcapsule. Seedsreniformorsuborbicular.
