Scientific Description:

Plant small. Leaves with few, short, triangular side lobes and ± obtuse terminal lobe; petioles pink. Involucre bright green, outer phyllaries up to 3.5 mm broad, strongly recurved at tip. Ligules pale yellow; stigmas dirty yellow or greenish. Achenes deep brown-red, 4−4.5 mm (incl. 1.3 mm cone); beak 8 mm.

 

Flowering time: April−June.

Habitat: Roadsides, fields, rocky places, 150−2300 m.

Public Description:

Taraxacum buttleri, known as “karahindiba” in Turkish, is distributed in Greece and Türkiye. It is a small herbaceous perennial plant with pale yellow flowers. Its blooms between April and June and is found in roadsides, field and rocky slopes. Dandelions (Taraxacum Zinn species) been used in herbal medicine to treat bile and liver problems and as a diuretic. Their leaves contains A, C and K vitamins and are good sources of calcium, potassium, iron, and manganese. Due to its high potassium level, dandelion can also increase the risk of “hyperkalemia” which is increased level of potassium in blood when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
