Scientific Description:

Subscapigerous to caulescent annual to biennial, 15−30 cm; rootstock cylindrical, poorly developed, not crowned by leaf remains. Leaves pinnatipartite, 7−20 × 2−4 cm, usually crisped-pubescent when young, becoming glabrous, petiolate; leaf segments linear-lanceolate to broadly ovate-lanceolate. Capitula 1−3 per stem, 13−25 mm long. Outer phyllaries 4−8 mm, ovate-lanceolate; inner 15−23 mm (in fruit), linear-lanceolate. Flowers yellow; ligules 1−1.3 × as long as inner phyllaries in young capitula, elongating as capitula develop, apparently remaining erect. Achenes stipitate, 10−15 mm, cylindrical, prominently ridged, glabrous; pappus hairs plumose.

Flowering time: April−June.

Habitat: Salt steppe, cultivated land, etc., s.l.−2300 m.

Scorzonera laciniata subsp. laciniata, known as “Cutleaf Viper's-grass salsify, is native to the Mediterranean to the east to Pakistan. It is an annuals or biennials plant with yellow flowers, and grows up to 30 cm in length. It blooms between April and June and is found in salt steppe and cultivated land.
