Scilla bifolia L. - Two-leaf Squill
Scientific Description:
Bulb 0.5−2 cm diam.; tunics brown, scales pinkish or whitish. Leaves (l−)2(−7), broadly linear, (4−) 7−19(−35) cm × (1.5−)3−15 mm, usually sheathing lower part of scape. Scape solitary, erect, 5−28(−37) cm. Raceme l−15(−25)-flowered, often subsecund; pedicels erect or suberect, lower to 5 cm, upper much shorter. Bracts absent or ovate-lanceolate, 0.5−l(−4) mm. Perianth segments bright blue, lilac-blue or bluish-purple, (4−) 5−10(−12) × 1.5−2.5(−3) mm, spreading. Filaments 0.5−l (−1.5) mm broad at base. Ovary obovoid or subglobose, 2−3 mm diam. Style straight, (1.5−) 2−4.5(−6) mm. Seeds subglobose, c. 2 mm diam., brown with white irregular caruncle.
Flowering Time: February−June(−July).
Habitat: Woods, grassland, limestone rocks, by snow, 80−2400 m.

Public Description:
Scilla bifolia, known as “two-leaf squill”, is native to Europe and western Russia south through Turkey to Syria. It is a bulbous perennial herb with lilac-blue flowers and can be reach up to 30 cm. It blooms between February and June, and is found in woods, grasslands, limestone rocks. It is seen especially in places where snow starts to melt.
