Scientific Description:
Rhizomatous perennial forming lax clumps. Stems (20−)30−50(−80) cm, smooth, terete, clothed at base with smooth brownish or greyish remains of leaf sheaths. Ligule 1−1.5 mm, rounded to truncate. Leaf blades (1.5−)2−4 mm broad, flat. Panicle pyramidal, (3.5−)5−12 cm; lowest branches in whorls of 3−5. Glumes unequal, lower 1-veined, upper prominently 3-veined. Lemma hairy on keel and marginal veins, sparsely lanate at base; lowest (2.5−)3−4 mm.
Flowering time: May−August.
Habitat: Alpine pastures, moist meadows, pine (Pinus L.) forest clearings, streamsides, lakesides, nr s.l−2800 m.

Public Description:
Poa pratensis, commonly known as “Kentucky Blue grass”, “Smooth Meadow-grass” or “Common Meadow-grass”, is native to Europe, Asia, North America and northern Africa. It is a perennial herb and grows up to 80 cm in length. It blooms between May and August and is found in alpine pastures, moist meadows, pine forest clearings, streamsides and lakesides. It is used for making lawns in parks and gardens and is common in cool moist climates.
