Scientific Description:
Biennial (?) 60−200 cm. Stem stout, branched, unwinged, sparsely arachnoid. Median cauline leaves oblong, pinnatisect, lateral lobes bifid, 6−15-paired, lanceolate, lateral and terminal lobes with usually stout 5−15 mm apical spine, spinulose-setose above, with setae 0.4−1.7 mm, otherwise glabrous; arachnoid-tomentose below. Lateral branches 1−6, 1−6-capitulate; uppermost leaves 3−8, involucrate, usually shorter than involucre. Involucres erect, ovoid to broadly obovoid, (25−) 30−45(−50) mm. Phyllaries arachnoid, 8−11-seriate, erecto-patent to patent; median with cochleariform narrowly obovate appendage (l.6−)2−3.5 mm wide incl. stramineous scarious-fimbriate margin, abruptly narrowed to (0.6−)l−2(−2.5) × 0.1−1.2 mm apical spine. Corollas purple, 21.5−32 mm. Achenes 4.5−6.5 mm. Pappus 17.5−27 mm.
Flowering time: August−September.
Habitat: Clearings in woods, beech woods, banks in fir (Abies L.) forest, hedges, steppe, 650−1430 m.

Public Description:
Cirsium ligulare, known as “kör kazankulpu”, is distributed in the Mediterranean regions. It is a biennial herb with purple flowers, and grows up to 200 cm in length. It blooms between Agust and September and is found in clearings in woods, beech woods, banks in “fir (Abies Mill.)” forests, hedges and steppe.
