Brachypodium pinnatum(L.) P. Beauv. - Heath False Brome
Scientific Description:
Strongly rhizomatous perennial, often forming wide stands. Stems 30−80 cm, usually hairless. Leaf blades stiff, erect, 2−7 mm broad, light or yellowish-green, smooth or scabrid. Raceme spike-like, 4−12 cm, ± erect, with (4−)8−22 spikelets. Pedicels 1−2 mm. Spikelets cylindrical, 15−25 mm, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, glabrous. Glumes unequal, glabrous, mucronate. Florets 7−15. Lemmas lanceolate-oblong, acute, 6−10 mm, 7-veined; awn 1−7 mm, erect.
Flowering time: June−August.
Habitat: Unshaded habitats, mainly grassy hillsides, meadows and limestone pastures, s.l−2400 m.

Public Description:
Brachypodium pinnnatum, known as “heath false brome” or “tor-grass”, has a widespread distribution in temperate region of the Northern Hemisphere. It is a perennail herb and grows up to 80 cm in length. It blooms between June and August and is found in unshaded habitats, mainly grassy hillsides, meadows and limestone pastures. Population increases of this plant are associated with nitrogen deposition from pollution.
