Scientific Description:
Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Leaves alternate, linear to narrowly elliptic, entire. Inflorescence a spike, raceme or panicle. Flowers hermaphrodite, ± sessile, usually subtended by 1 bract and 2 bracteoles. Perianth uniseriate, 4−5-lobed. Ovary inferior. Style simple. Stigma capitate. Fruit a 1-seeded nut crowned by persistent perianth.

Public Description:
Thesium, known as “tezgüvelek” in Turkish, is distibuted in Africa, Asia and South America. It consists of parasitic or semi-parasitic annual or perennial herbaceous plants or subshrubs. There are approximately 305 species in the world and 16 species (16 taxa) in Türkiye.
