Scientific Description:
Tendrillous, glabrous annuals, often climbing. Differing from Lathyrus L. in its terete stems; large leafy toothed stipules (usually larger than the 2−6 leaflets) with a rounded, dentate, semi-amplexicaul at base; calyx teeth broad, ± leafy; keel cristate below and towards the tip, adherent to the wings; proximal part of style with retroflexed margins, distal part bearded on the upper surface. Pisum, known as “pea”, is a genus of climbing annual plants, and is native to southwest Asia and northeast Africa. There are 7 species in the world and 2 species (9 taxa) in Türkiye. “Pisum” is the ancient Latin name of meaning “pea”. Pisum sativum L. (the field or garden pea), is a major human food crop.
