HELMINTHOTHECA Zinn - OX-TONGUE

Scientific Description:

Annual to perennial branched herbs, erect to decumbent. Indumentum in part at least consisting of anchor-shaped glochids with 26 barbs (predominently 2-and 4-barbed). Basal leaves oblanceolate, attenuate and subpetiolate at base, remotely dentate or sinuate, cauline oblong to ovate, sessile. Capitula homogamous, ligulate. Involucre ovoid-urceolate; phyllaries 2-seriate, outer ones (usually 5) foliaceous, ovate to cordate, inner phyllaries linear-lanceolate. Receptacle naked. Flowers yellow. Achenes heteromorphic (in Turkey), inner achenes obovoid, transversely imbricate, rugulose, long beaked. Pappus hairs numerous, plumose.

Public Description:

Helminthotheca is a genus of annual or perennial herbs, known as “ox-tongue”, and is widespread across much of Europe and the Mediterranean from Ireland and Canary Islands to Poland, Türkiye and Iran. It is also naturalized in Australia, North and South America. There are 5 species in the world and 1 species (1 taxon) in Türkiye.
