CICHORIUM L. - CHICORY
Scientific Description:
Annual, biennial or perennial herbs. Capitula homogamous, ligulate, terminal, axillary or on peduncles. Involucre cylindrical; phyllaries 2-seriate, outer series usually shorter than inner. Receptacle flat, usually naked. Flowers sky blue (rarely white). Achenes glabrous, obovoid, truncate, bearing a pappus of 1−2 rows of short blunt scales.

Public Description:
Cichorium is a genus of annual, biennial or perennial herbs commonly known as “chicory” or “endive”, is native to Europe, Türkiye and North America. There are 10 species in the world and 5 species (5 taxa) in Türkiye. They have blue or lavender (rarely white or pink) flowers. “True endive (Cichorium endivia L.)” is grown for leaves and is used as greens in salads. Some species are also grown for their roots which are used as a coffee substitute, similar to dandelion coffee.
